How Do I Register a Domain Name?

Posted in: Domain name, Web Hosting, Website Help |

Now you’ve decided that you want to do business online or make a website. The first thing you need is a home for your website on the World Wide Web so you will need to register a domain name. A domain name gives your website an Internet address. Once you have decided what domain name you want you need to register your domain name with an accredited registrar. You can register a domain name by going to a domain name registry, either one of the well-known ones, like Network Solutions, Register.com, or GoDaddy.com. There are thousands of accredited registrars to choose from and costs for registering a domain name vary. I advise you to take service into account and ask others for their recommendations rather than choosing a registrar based solely on price. The registration process is usually described on the registrar’s home page. You will be asked to insert your chosen domain name (e.g., your name, name of your business), and then select a suffix or extension (.com, .net, .org., etc.). The registrar will then conduct a search of all currently registered domain names, including extensions, to determine whether your choice is available. If it is, you can proceed. If the name is not available, most registrars will suggest other similar names. Provided the domain name you want to register is available, you then proceed to purchase the name from the registrar. After you have made your selections, you will be asked to make a payment by Credit Card or PayPal then you are ready to go.

Now that you’ve registered a domain name, you have a home for your business on the Web. To actually turn it into a functioning website, though, you need to have a Web Host, the next step in starting an online business or website.
