5.1 SURROUND SETUP W/VISTA
This task requires your computer to have 5.1 surround capabilities
Hardware I used:
-Dell Dimension C521 W/ Windows Vista
-Integrated 5.1 surround sound
-CONNECTED TO-
-Logitech X-540 70 watt surround speaker system
(1) Connect speaker system to your computer as instructed by your system’s owners / installation manual.
(2) Left click the start button in the lower left hand corner of your desktop.
(3) On the right side of the resulting Start Menu, left click “Control Panel“. This should open the “Control Panel window”.
(4) On the left side of the Control Panel window Left click “Classic View” under “Control Panel Home”. (This makes things a little easier to navigate)
(5) The Control Panel window should contain an icon that looks like a little speaker and is labeled “Sound“. Double left click it. This should open a small widow titled “Sound”.
(6) Right click the “Speakers” listing on the playback tab opening a smaller window and left click “Configure Speakers”
(7) On the “Speaker Setup/Choose your configuration” window is a small box labeled “Audio Channels“, left click the listing “5.1 Surround“. Left click the “Test” button to ensure everything is connected properly. The Speaker Setup window will animate an on screen speaker diagram that will correspond with the appropriate satellite if the system is properly connected. When finished, left click the “Next” button.
VISTA will automatically set up the rest of the configuration, so keep left clicking the “Next” button moving through each window until you click the “Finish” Button. Be sure to take the time to read over each menu just so you know how everything is setup and where things are located.
When finished, close any windows or applications you might have running and restart your computer.

Ok what if it doesn’t show any of that only two speaker options. Originally my 5.1 t5400 worked fine. Then somewhere an update changed it and removed the settings. Now i can’t find any options for surround sound any way to reinsall this vista feature?

I’m stuck at step 7. I have the Logitech Z-5500 5.1 surround speakers and a Sound Blaster Audigy 24-bit 5.1 surround sound card. The speaker set has a test button which allows you to test each speaker if they are connected correctly and they are.. but when I do the test from the one mentioned in step 7, I only hear the Left and Right speakers. There’s no sound coming from the rest. What’s the problem here? Thanks.

First off, check your control box for the speakers. They are Logitech and in my experiences they provide a virtual surround that if active doesn’t allow proper sound if your settings are set for 5.1 on your pc.
Second your Sound Blaster settings may need to be changed if your computers default sound source is set to be handled by your Sound Blaster which it should be.
You can also try reinstalling the sound cards drivers

I successfully go through all these steps and find wma or wmv files working fine, yet other sound samples (like wav files with 5-6 channels) don’t work on the rear speakers.

Came accross this message:
On Window Vista, Microsoft removed the ‘Hardware Abstraction Layer’ which
means that DirectSound3D can no longer be hardware accelerated by a
soundcard. This means that the OpenAL device ‘Generic Hardware’ which uses
DirectSound3D Hardware Buffers no longer functions on Vista.
This means that if you don’t have a soundcard with a ‘native’ AL Device
then you won’t get multi-speaker output on Windows Vista

I have a 2.1 stereo system which plugs into the green L+R jack on the pc. I have recently acquired a new center speaker. The center speaker connects to the sub via +ve & -ve wires (as do the L & R) and then there is a connection for the center going from the sub to the orange center on the pc. I have connected everything but the center produces no sound – the windows vista speaker set up only has stero, quadraphonic, 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound set ups – how can I get a 3.1 set up to work, there muts be a way!
The speaker system is the Aego M series by acoustic energy!
