I turned on my iPod, it said “Connect to your computer. Use iTunes to restore.” What is this?
If you get this message on you iPod, and iTunes will not find “your” iPod but finds a iPod connected with the name “iPod” in the left menu bar of iTunes, and the iPod restore will not work. (iPod locks up. Will not connect to computer.) How to fix iPod that says use iTunes to restore. Try the steps below.
I received this error message when I plugged in an FM Tuner or FM transmitter that would transmit across the whole FM band 88.0 to 107.0. It plugged into the iPod Plug not the headphone jack, it would also charge the iPod when it was plugged into the wall or car plug. I could not get my iPod to work until I did the steps in this post. After it was done the FM Tuner worked and the message has not come back yet.
But there are many reasons why you might get this message.
This error does not always mean you iPod is Dead or Fully Broken.
Please check the comments, other people have fixed this issue in different ways. If you had this happen to you and you were able to fix it please post, how you got the error and how you fixed it (did you plug something in like me?). We are just trying to help people so their first reaction isn’t my iPod is BAD and run out and buy a new one.

How do I make my i-pod look and say exacly that? Are there steps to make my i-pod say exacly that?
August 26th, 2007 at 12:19 am
No this is not steps to take if you want your iPod to say this. This is a how-to on, getting your iPod working if you get this message.
Now if you want to get this Error message, just go into the iPod diagnostic panel and when you come out of it you will sometimes get that Error.

February 14th, 2008 at 11:43 pm

February 23rd, 2008 at 6:22 am
I found this site: http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7207
all the programs listed are suppose to fix all ipod problems, but for me it didn’t fix anything. In the middle of the process it always says: Unable to complete Format.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:04 am
I got my Ipod to work! I went to restore my Ipod, when i got the message that the Ipod has been restored and the message will go away in however many seconds it was, I disconnected it. Then i waited for about five minutes and my ipod worked. But now every time I sync my ipod with itunes my computer crashes!!!
February 25th, 2008 at 8:34 am
try rockbox
February 25th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Thats exactly what I was going to try but as soon as I plug my Ipod in even if Itunes isn’t open, it’ll automatically try syncing thus crashing my computer. Also puppetmasta I tried doing this before I restored my Ipod
http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml
So do what the the link says to do then, restore your Ipod when you get the message that restore is complete.
February 25th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
After its done formatting like that link says to do then restore the ipod and unplug as soon as the message pops up that says it will go away in howevermany seconds.

March 17th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
WoW if you dropped it down the stairs then it may be dead for sure. Did you try the steps in the post?
In this post I do not restore it, I just do some reboots of the PC and fresh deletes of iTunes then reinstall and Reseting the iPod….
Link to How to Reset the iPod.
March 19th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
It took me 3 months to fix this. What I did was force it into disk mode by resting the ipod and then holding down the play/pause button and middle button. Then plug the ipod into the computer and go to “my computer”. Reformat by doing this: http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml
When its done reformatting it should say “could not complete format” or something like that. It still worked even though you got that message. Then after that restore your ipod in itunes and as soon as you see the message stating that restore is complete and this message will erase in 10 seconds unplug the ipod and it should work. It may take 5 minutes for it to boot up.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
I’m glad to hear your iPod is fixed Lou.. That link is a good resource for people who need help with their iPod. Thanks again..

help!! Replaced screen in a 30GB video ipod. Now I’m getting same thing as Louie82y. I operate on a mac, so some of his fixes don’t work for me. My ipod says to connect to the computer and itunes. When I try to reformat it gives me the 1416 error. When I delete itunes, reboot, and reinstall I get the same thing. A day or so ago I got the thing working but then within 24 hours it deleted everything. Again I got it up and running and then pressed reset to see if it took, and it didn’t. I am at wit’s end! What can I do on my mac? I tried repairing it, but in utilities it won’t give me access to it because the command is in grey. In the past when I finally lucked into it running the repair function said there was nothing wrong! This can’t be right. HELP!!

same problem here! still no luck to fix my ipod displaying ” used itune to restore” any other solusyon out there???
September 8th, 2008 at 5:21 am
hint for those of you getting this message after dropping your ipod.
if it’s out of warranty, FIND OUT FIRST the best way to open it up and check the connections. look for loose connections and or pinched/torn ribbon cables betweenthe harddrive and the board. Oh, and if your drive is grinding, this won’t help all by itself. There’s ways to fix that too, but with varying degrees of success.
Bottom line- the message that you’re getting doesn’t necessarily mean your files are lost, and if you’re willing to take the chance at opening it up, you might be able to get everything back with no problem. This just happened to me last night and it works like a charm now.
anyway, hope that points some of you in the right direction…

An unknown error occured(1437)”plzz help me. Its a 5th generation video IPOD.
November 12th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Also the (do not disconnect) Icon which it usually shows in black n red color has become colorless.
November 13th, 2008 at 5:09 am
i have the dreaded 1437 error also ,on a 30g 5th gen
apple support says its 1 of three things.
1 itunes problem
2.ipod problems.
3.usb problem
fantastic what the hell else could it be the idiots ,there aint nothing else.
however in bmy case i have 3 other ipods in the house all work to any usb port on any itunes version on 4 computers
i think apple covered all bases with their answer exept, whats wrong with it
after much reading on the net on this error and trying all fixes with no success i suspect its a drive problem because in diagnostic mode i do not have a hdscan option come up.i suspect that the drive may need formating.of course windows wont do it do it cos the drive shown shows as unknown op sys. therefore im getting a zif hard drive to ide 3.5 adapter and will try to see the drive in dos
and see if it needs a fdisk / format /scandisk
its all i can think of .at least it will prove the drive
this ipod has done 93 hours since sept 2006.
has anyone else had a drive failure for so few hours without being dropped.

Is anyone getting the ipod error 1418?
December 31st, 2008 at 5:37 pm
I had this error 1437 on my iPod suffle (2nd) generation) to overcome the problem I had to turn off boot sector scanning of removable media within the free version of ‘AVG’ I have installed.
1. Double click the AVG icon in the system tray.
2. Tools -> Advanced Settings -> Resident Shield
3. Uncheck “Scan boot sector of removable media”
4. Apply -> OK
5. Reattach the ipod to the PC with the power switch in the off position

wow AVG was the problem oliver? Thank you very much for the tip.
January 2nd, 2009 at 11:11 am
Further research and testing … as my AVG fix seems to have been a one off fix. I’ve since had the error message. I wasn’t too happy to see it back !!!!
AVG did not seem to be the only cause of the error message. The message itself seems to be a very generic one. One that simply means there was a communication problem of some description. Whether that be of a software config issue (AVG) or a hardware driver, or actual physical hardware. On top the AVG config change.
1. I installed iTunes on my company laptop to prove there wasn’t a hardware problem. There wasn’t so wiped the device of songs.
2. On my home PC (the problematic machine) Moved the iPod Shuffle docking device from my on board USB connection (Front port) to one of the ports on a USB PCI card I have installed. (Differing make / model and drivers)
Correct troubleshooting you make one change and then retest. I didn’t :-/ the combination of the two points above and my previous AVG posting seems to have fixed the problem.
Good luck and Happy New Year – Oliver

[..YouTube..] when i connect mine to itunes when it’s in disk mode itunes finds it and when i click restore my ipod goes out of disk mode so it won’t restore it its EXTREMELY annoying
January 12th, 2009 at 5:13 am
My iPod showed on the screen “Use iTunes to restore” every time I turned it on after multiple resets. I then attempted a restore after I wiped the old version of iTunes and downloaded the latest version of iTunes to my pc. My iPod still wouldn’t restore when I attempted to sync it as my pc didnt even recognize it. So lastly, I hooked up my iPod to complete a restore and when it stated “the message will disappear in 10 seconds” after the restore took place I put it into disk mode while it was still connected. Then I disconnected it. I waited a few minutes and reconnected my iPod and my pc finally recognized my iPod and began syncing it after I chose my language on my iPod settings.
This was very frustrating. Hope this helps someone else.

Did you restore like this. http://www.ezcomputerhelp.org/how-to-restore-ipod/
And did you try the iPod Reset http://www.ezcomputerhelp.org/how-to-reset-the-ipod-my-ipod-wont-turn-on-or-off/
Or try the iPod Diagnostics mode http://www.ezcomputerhelp.org/accessing-your-ipods-diagnostics/
January 24th, 2009 at 12:17 am
I got this error, did not try this, but found a way that fixed it for me:
I couldn’t get it recognized in iTunes and it would freeze after plugging it in and windows saying “Unknown Device” something or other. So, I plugged it into an alternative energy source. I plugged it into my dock via it’s own USB port and it did not take it to a charging screen, only the “Restore with iTunes” and “Connect to computer” screen. Left it on there for about 20 minutes and decided to try a different USB port. (I used a back one before since my cord was already hooked up to there with an extension USB). This time I tried the front. Showed up in iTunes, started to restore, now it’s good to go.
Good luck, loki1717

All I did was plug it in to my computer and waited a day. Then it let me restore! Don’t ask how I don’t know!
February 5th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
I have the same problem mine was working fine one day and then the next day I turned on my IPod and it said connect to your computer and use Itunes to restore. I braught it to the Genius at the Apple store and they told me it was an hard drive problem and that they don’t fix them that they would have to break the Ipod to get at the hard drive. But they would replace the same Ipod for $150.00 or to trade it in for a new one and save 10% I Paid over $400.00 for this Ipod video 60Gb. so it just didn’t sound right I came home and went online and saw you could replace the hard drive and you could even do it yourself and upgrade it. I tried everything above and nothing is working so far. I will try a hard drive if I can’t get it to go.

My ipod is being really weird. It said the exact same thing and I had plugged it in restored it and did all the steps that I had to do. After it said that I had restored it. The Ipod rebooted and pretty soon it came up in Itunes and said that it was once again in repair mode! I kept doing the same thing over and over again! But it just doesn’t work! Any advice??

I see some of you are trying to resolve this particular problem on your iPod and that you remain stuck in what I call a “Recovery [or Restore] mode loop”. If this happening, one thing I might suggest is running a diagnostic or two on your iPod.
First, try the iPod’s own diagnostic software. This page gives some information on this: http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/index.shtmll
You’ll want to navigate to the Hard Disk/IO function and if you have the option, run a hard disk scan. If not, at minimum, take note of the some of the information under the SMART function (if available). In particular, write down what your “Reallocs” and “Pending Sectors” values are. If you find that these values are significant or more importantly, increasing in value, you may have a hard disk failure on your hands.
Does your iPod not have a hard disk scan option? Download a copy of Seagate’s SeaTools for Windows. When it comes up, select your iPod and run the “Short Generic” and “Long Generic” tests. If you get a “FAIL” during testing, you’ll need to invest in a repair or replacement of your unit – sorry. Here’s one that I couldn’t save: http://www.chicagophoto.net/blackhole/Stuff/BadiPodtest.png.
Hope this helps…

Try this:
1) make sure ipod is off
2) turn on then off the hold button
3) hold the top menu button and select button at the same time for 10 seconds
4) it should turn to a black screen, then hold the play/pause button and select button at the same time.
5) it should now boot into disk mode.
6) plug into computer and restore it

My IPod won’t restore. When I turn it on it says it needs to be restored and to connect it to my computer, but when I did that error 1437 popped up. I basically tried everything. I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes, I reinstalled the dlls, and read a bunch of tutorials and tried almost every single way to fix my ipod, and error 1437 keeps popping up. I’m losing all hope my ipod will ever work…please help
May 17th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
If you have exactly the same problem as in the Video. Don’t worry..!! I fixed it myself in about 10 minutes. I tried many thing for several days. Nothing seemed to really work, and I thought I was never gonna fix this Ipod. It’s pretty simple.
1) Nothing is wrong with the Itunes
2) Nothing is wrong with the Ipod software
3) All there is to it is some lose connections inside.
Now this is what you do:
1) Open up you Ipod and remove the cover.
Believe me this works.
2) Disconnect the motherboard from the hard drive
3) Reconnect it
4) Disconnect and reconnect the other two connections ONLY from the motherboard
5) Do NOT close the Ipod yet, just connect it to the computer
6)Check if it works or not, if not do the same process again because there still might be a few lose connections
7) Try this until your Ipod appears in you Itunes as a well functioning Ipod
IF you have any concerns feel free to message me to gesuferr@yahoo.com

My dear friends, the best solution to this problem is to take these ipod technology and stick it up these cunts assholes. . . .mon, technology is technology it can have sever problems time to time, but when you hype about a technology this great and enlightening, they need that bit up their ass. . . .I have to say, how the fuck your going to already charge such high rediculous price for the player and not provide the services for free. . . .what a fucking establishment. . . .from my heart: FUCK YOU anything with an (i) preceeding what is known as pod. . . .your technology is sophisticated, yet relentless to be fixed without a price. . . .i hope you marketing cunts drown in your money! This is just for the little problem that shouldn’t persist.

ok, my problem arose when i did a screen repair… i found that for some reason the directions that came with my kit told me to disconnect the hard drive (which wasn’t necessary)i opened my ipod again and reconnected the hard drive ribbon… problem solved! i now have a working ipod again.
also, if you are going to disconnect your hard drive for any reason i found that it is easier to release the ribbon on the actual hard drive and not on the circuit board.
November 22nd, 2009 at 3:00 pm
it’s possible that most of you never opened your ipod, but the ribbon got loose or went bad, try to snug it up, or get a new ribbon.

Listen to what Lou 82 says….
I just read all your comments and hers is the key…. You need to format your ipod first, if it says it couldn’t do it try again by disconnecting and re-connecting..
When you see the promt to format with a few changeable options…change the option which asks for an amount and change it to automatic (sorry dont remember what it asked for but it has like 4000 in it or something)
Then once its formatted go back to itunes and click restore, this time it should work..
If you lost all your tunes and need to replace em, unlucky but atleast you now have a working Ipod
Good luck guys… Peace
oh another point, if you cant find the restore option increase the screen resolution and it should appear in the main screen…

ummm, yesterday unplug my ipod video w/o ejecting. When i tried to plug it back in the iTunes pops up and tells me I need to restore it, my problem w/ that is I didnt want all my music and stuff to be lost. The next day(today) I going through music, its fine, but when I went through my videos it would start up slow then out of no where froze. Then I restarted the ipod, and it did the message ” Connect to your computer”, and so I did, and I’d rather be sure than sorry so what should I do? p.s. I’m pretty sure it just started w/ a simple disconnection mistake. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Hello,
I went through apple’s troubleshooting for the ipod not being recognized by Itunes nor WIndows explorer. In other words when i plug it in t takes me to “do not disconnect” and stays there.
