I turned on my iPod, it said “Connect to your computer. Use iTunes to restore.” What is this?
If you get this message on you iPod, and iTunes will not find “your” iPod but finds a iPod connected with the name “iPod” in the left menu bar of iTunes, and the iPod restore will not work. (iPod locks up. Will not connect to computer.) How to fix iPod that says use iTunes to restore. Try the steps below.
I received this error message when I plugged in an FM Tuner or FM transmitter that would transmit across the whole FM band 88.0 to 107.0. It plugged into the iPod Plug not the headphone jack, it would also charge the iPod when it was plugged into the wall or car plug. I could not get my iPod to work until I did the steps in this post. After it was done the FM Tuner worked and the message has not come back yet.
But there are many reasons why you might get this message.
This error does not always mean you iPod is Dead or Fully Broken.
Please check the comments, other people have fixed this issue in different ways. If you had this happen to you and you were able to fix it please post, how you got the error and how you fixed it (did you plug something in like me?). We are just trying to help people so their first reaction isn’t my iPod is BAD and run out and buy a new one.
- Eject or Unplug the iPod from the computer
- Uninstall iTunes from the (click Start, Settings, click Control Panel,Add or Remove Programs)
- Reboot the computer
- Download a new copy of iTunes form the Apple website
- Install the new copy of iTunes
- Plug the iPod back into the computer

August 25th, 2007 at 10:10 pm
How do I make my i-pod look and say exacly that? Are there steps to make my i-pod say exacly that?
August 26th, 2007 at 12:19 am
No this is not steps to take if you want your iPod to say this. This is a how-to on, getting your iPod working if you get this message.
Now if you want to get this Error message, just go into the iPod diagnostic panel and when you come out of it you will sometimes get that Error.

February 14th, 2008 at 4:47 am
Louie82y you might be able to use IpodWizard. I tryed but the darn thing aint working for me.
February 14th, 2008 at 11:43 pm
I’ll try it but isn’t it a hack for ipods like Rockbox?
February 15th, 2008 at 12:04 am
Wait how would i use ipod Wizard to fix my ipod?
February 23rd, 2008 at 3:18 am
it fixes it but it wont fix mine ……might for yours google it read about it ….not like it will waste your ipod anymore then it is
February 23rd, 2008 at 6:22 am
I found this site: http://www.ipodwizard.net/showthread.php?t=7207
all the programs listed are suppose to fix all ipod problems, but for me it didn’t fix anything. In the middle of the process it always says: Unable to complete Format.
February 25th, 2008 at 5:04 am
I got my Ipod to work! I went to restore my Ipod, when i got the message that the Ipod has been restored and the message will go away in however many seconds it was, I disconnected it. Then i waited for about five minutes and my ipod worked. But now every time I sync my ipod with itunes my computer crashes!!!
February 25th, 2008 at 8:34 am
try rockbox
February 25th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Thats exactly what I was going to try but as soon as I plug my Ipod in even if Itunes isn’t open, it’ll automatically try syncing thus crashing my computer. Also puppetmasta I tried doing this before I restored my Ipod
http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml
So do what the the link says to do then, restore your Ipod when you get the message that restore is complete.
February 25th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
After its done formatting like that link says to do then restore the ipod and unplug as soon as the message pops up that says it will go away in howevermany seconds.
March 11th, 2008 at 4:33 am

i dropped my iPod down the stairs and it came up with this message.. i have tried restarting it but its just making a clunking noise and turns on anf off with this message.. i have restored it but it says its in recovery mode… PLEASE HEEELLP MEEE!!!
March 17th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
WoW if you dropped it down the stairs then it may be dead for sure. Did you try the steps in the post?
In this post I do not restore it, I just do some reboots of the PC and fresh deletes of iTunes then reinstall and Reseting the iPod….
Link to How to Reset the iPod.
March 19th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
It took me 3 months to fix this. What I did was force it into disk mode by resting the ipod and then holding down the play/pause button and middle button. Then plug the ipod into the computer and go to “my computer”. Reformat by doing this: http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/ipodsupport/erase/index.shtml
When its done reformatting it should say “could not complete format” or something like that. It still worked even though you got that message. Then after that restore your ipod in itunes and as soon as you see the message stating that restore is complete and this message will erase in 10 seconds unplug the ipod and it should work. It may take 5 minutes for it to boot up.
March 19th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
I’m glad to hear your iPod is fixed Lou.. That link is a good resource for people who need help with their iPod. Thanks again..

help!! Replaced screen in a 30GB video ipod. Now I’m getting same thing as Louie82y. I operate on a mac, so some of his fixes don’t work for me. My ipod says to connect to the computer and itunes. When I try to reformat it gives me the 1416 error. When I delete itunes, reboot, and reinstall I get the same thing. A day or so ago I got the thing working but then within 24 hours it deleted everything. Again I got it up and running and then pressed reset to see if it took, and it didn’t. I am at wit’s end! What can I do on my mac? I tried repairing it, but in utilities it won’t give me access to it because the command is in grey. In the past when I finally lucked into it running the repair function said there was nothing wrong! This can’t be right. HELP!!

same problem here! still no luck to fix my ipod displaying ” used itune to restore” any other solusyon out there???
September 8th, 2008 at 5:21 am
hint for those of you getting this message after dropping your ipod.
if it’s out of warranty, FIND OUT FIRST the best way to open it up and check the connections. look for loose connections and or pinched/torn ribbon cables betweenthe harddrive and the board. Oh, and if your drive is grinding, this won’t help all by itself. There’s ways to fix that too, but with varying degrees of success.
Bottom line- the message that you’re getting doesn’t necessarily mean your files are lost, and if you’re willing to take the chance at opening it up, you might be able to get everything back with no problem. This just happened to me last night and it works like a charm now.
anyway, hope that points some of you in the right direction…
September 28th, 2008 at 11:05 am

i have the dreaded 1437 error also ,on a 30g 5th gen
apple support says its 1 of three things.
1 itunes problem
2.ipod problems.
3.usb problem
fantastic what the hell else could it be the idiots ,there aint nothing else.
however in bmy case i have 3 other ipods in the house all work to any usb port on any itunes version on 4 computers
i think apple covered all bases with their answer exept, whats wrong with it
after much reading on the net on this error and trying all fixes with no success i suspect its a drive problem because in diagnostic mode i do not have a hdscan option come up.i suspect that the drive may need formating.of course windows wont do it do it cos the drive shown shows as unknown op sys. therefore im getting a zif hard drive to ide 3.5 adapter and will try to see the drive in dos
and see if it needs a fdisk / format /scandisk
its all i can think of .at least it will prove the drive
this ipod has done 93 hours since sept 2006.
has anyone else had a drive failure for so few hours without being dropped.
