Install Games to the Xbox 360 Hard Drive
Quite recently, Microsoft issued a mandatory update for the Xbox 360 Dashboard via Xbox LIVE. This update is called the NXE or ‘New Xbox Experience’. There are lots of great features in this update, besides the new 3D interface.
One of my personal favorites is the ability to install your games to the Xbox 360’s Hard Drive. This is extremely useful for a few reasons, the first being that it will in most cases make load times faster. Very often it does nothing, and in the case of Halo 3, it increases the load time. The second, and probably more important reason is that it makes your Xbox 360 almost silent. This is because the DVD drive in the Xbox no longer needs to spin, the drive generates most of the noise that the Xbox is constantly put down for.
Installing the games is quite simple. All you need is your Xbox and the game you want to install.
Once you have the Disc in the tray and the Xbox is sitting on the Dashboard screen, scroll to ‘My Xbox’ and select the game you want to install. Do not press the ‘A’ Button. Instead press the ‘Y’ button. This will bring you to a game details screen, from which you can choose the ‘Install to hard drive’ option.
The process usually takes about 15-30 minutes depending on various factors. When this is finished, you’re free to play away!
I do have one problem with the technology though. When I first heard about it, I thought I could stop changing the Discs in my Xbox 360 and just press a button to switch games. Unfortunately, not so. You still need to have the game in the DVD drive for proof of ownership. (Please Microsoft, make this happen in the next Dashboard update)

[..YouTube..] You have to have the disk to start up the game. Then when you playing the disk will stop so that yo don’t overheat the CD drive. That would be nice to download any game and play with it without the disk. The upside of this is, if you download the game to your HD and you scratch the game it will still play when you play the game from the HD…

[..YouTube..] Yeah, you really need to have a lot of hard drive space available for this. I just got the 120 GB HDD for my birthday, and I plan to install all of my RPG’s onto it. Oblivion is going to run like grease on wheels with the installation feature. The same applies to Fallout 3. The 60 GB from the premium package is also a good choice to the players newer to the xbox.

[..YouTube..] i did it on my disc because it literally makes the scratch go away as long as its not too deep. =-) just dont use too much because it has acetone in it which can harm your disc if you use a lot so just dab some on a towel and rub it on your disc and wipe it off real fast. good luck =-)

You will still need the game to be insert in the console so that it’s proof that you really own the game. okay i have a problem my ntsc fifa 09 cd has a small crack in the center and i forgot to install it so sometimes it works but after a few minutes of play it says unplayable disc, my question is can i install an ntsc version from my friend then use a pal version to play cus they only sell pal games where i am located or better yet can i switch my hard drive to a pal 360 then install it there then switch to ntsc xbox and play it with an ntsc cd?

Great stuff i have scratched two of the same games by accident and am a natural clutz this way i can just rent the game install it and use either of the scratched disks to play the game without buying a new one!…people should sell scratched discs for a fiver on ebay that way i could buy them and rent the game for 3 quid and install it to hdd and walla games for 8 quid!

Oh and with regards to the Xbox reading the inside of the disc: A disc writes from the inside to the outside, and the information on what the session is is written at the close of the session. You can see it on an Xbox disc quite clearly. There’s a band about three millimetres wide around the rim of the disc that is noticably brighter than the rest of the surface.

I rented a game to try it before I bought it. Installed it to hard drive. Decided to purchase it and when I put the new disc in the drive I no longer had an option to play from hard drive. I had to install it again. In the memory it shows two installs to my HDD. I deleted the rented install since I didn’t need it any longer.
So I’m guessing if you scratch your disc, and then rent a game to do the install and try to play with your original disc you won’t be able to play it from your HDD.
The install must match the disc it was installed from.

I just scratched my NEW MW2 disc (UNREADABLE). I now taking my hard drive to my mates to copy his version to my hard drive, thus again being able to play my BRILLIANT MW2 again. Insterting my scratched disc which will only pick up my copyright from disc, and load game from hard drive. Saving me £45. Not so gay or useless now eh..?? if its installed on ur harddrive, it will (in most cases) play better. for example. if u scratch ur cod4: modern warfare disk a little, and it plays worse than it did before, u can borrow ur friends, install it, and yours should work like brand new. just because u install dosent make your games forever readable, so try no to scratch them in the first place

[..YouTube..] The whole point of the installation on the hard drive, is so it runs STRICTLY off of the hard drive. Which it does, it just needs the disc to read the “xbox 360 emblem on the inner circle to make sure your not selling the game and that you have a genuine copy”. Otherwise, it runs strictly off the hard drive, which means your cd drive isnt running constantly which reduces heat. And heat is the water of life for RROd. This drastically decreases your chances of rrod.

I have tried a few games and as far as loading times I didn’t find ANY difference.. but only an old game I had played a while back (fable2) it has a few minor scratches and skipped once or twice but that was it, then I installed it and played it from there and NEVER skipped again.. but does it really matter as far as gameplaY?

[..YouTube..] Good video, and it always a good idea to put your games on your harddrive. Also important to note is that your console is forced to bear a heavier workload if you just run the game from the tray, and can be more prone to heat issues.

Any sports game
Gears of War 2
The Orange Box
and anything that takes to long to load on

[..YouTube..] @NewFriendRequest92 Probably not. Ask blockbuster to buff the disc, and if that doesn’t work then I recommend buying a new copy. Be a little more careful next time. The Xbox 360 should almost always be used horizontally. The risk when used vertically is far too great.

[..YouTube..] @DuckThom No, because all the code is still signed. People would need Microsoft’s Private Key to do any modding of this stuff. If that thing was leaked though, the Xbox would either go off the market or a huge software update would be issued immediately. You still need a JTAG console to do any modding.

but if their are too many scratches/chips, you might get the good old “This disc is dirty” message. in which case its a coaster.

[..YouTube..] say if you have a scratched disc and it is very slow, install it into your hard drive, put ur disc in, and then play and it wont lag. note: it only needs the disc to start the game. you will notice that you wont hear any disc spinning sounds from the xbox. it helps scratched discs. do neva forget tht it helps.
