Quick Tip: Use Adium as Your Skype Client
Posted in: Apple, How to Video, Quick Tip, VoIP | June 13th, 2008
Ever wished you could get rid of one application from your screen? Well, If you’re running on Mac OS X then you can with this little Adium plugin. It is basically a remote for Skype that allows you to make calls, answer calls and chat from Adium. Just install the plugin and restart Adium with skype running and then add the account. That should save you a few pixels! Then you just hit Cmd+H and Skype disappears while you Skype away with Adium.

[..YouTube..] Thanks for the tip, I’ll give it a try!

[..YouTube..] what exactly does this do

[..YouTube..] Basically all it does is allow adium to be used as a skype client. You have to have skype open though, so basically it’s just interfacing with the app, as the Skype protocols are secret.

[..YouTube..] Why the hell would anyone see a point to this? If you have to have Skype open anyway, why bother tying it to Adium? The whole point of Adium is that you DON’T have to have all these other programs running and cluttering your Dock, right?

[..YouTube..] Not to sound rude, though I may…I think you need to investigate before you comment. This is actually CLEANING your dock. Modify skype so that the dock icon is no longer there and then you can interface to skype with adium. This is a plugin, not another app that you are running on your system. Thanks for watching!

[..YouTube..] Speaking of which… I didn’t run through the skype settings, but is there a way to remove the skype icon from the dock without having to go to the .plist and adding the LSUIELEMENTS (if i recall, that’s what it was…)?

[..YouTube..] Also, know of any way to quit skype when you quit adium?

[..YouTube..] Unfortunately there isn’t a way to get rid of the icon in preferences. When you edit that Plist, you are actually editing the preferences, it’s just a little more hardcore. Just watch my video on the subject, it’s not a hard thing to do.Thanks for watching!

[..YouTube..] No, because you still need skype to run the protocol and encode the video and stuff. What you can do is make the “Dock Icon” mod so that it doesn’t show up in your dock.
